A new model of psychotherapy
Internai Family Systems Therapy (IFSSM) is a psychotherapy model developed by Richard Schwartz, who discovered new ways of reducing psychic conflicts. Patients are led to work on their own belief systems and emotions. These are carried by sub-personalities called "parts", organized in microsystems that have become fixed following an experience or trauma. They tend to replace the Self in the conduct of psychic life. This work enables us to (re)create an inner dialogue between the parts, and between the parts and the Self, the central instance of the psyche, the seat of consciousness. The ultimate goal of therapy is to restore self-leadership, a state in which psychic life is once again harmoniously guided and directed by the Self. The originality of this approach lies in its profound respect for the patient's personality, and its integrative and collaborative dimension (between therapist and patient). It is at the forefront of a movement that privileges and values the patient's intuitive wisdom as a guide to resolving his or her problems, through the lifting of painful burdens often carried from childhood. This model has many applications in the conventional fields of psychotherapy, psychosomatics, institutional and organizational life, and social life. The publication of this book in its French version will make the model accessible to French-speaking professionals, with the same prospects for success as those encountered in the United States.
